Things to Do

Graylag’s simple pleasures can keep visitors busy every day of their vacation. The gently curving gradual-entry waterfront, with a dock and a raft attracts guest of all ages. Paddle our canoes and kayaks, use our rowboat to fish for bass and pickerel or sail on the peaceful lake. Take your camera to the beaver lodge and watch for loons, osprey, herons and of course wild geese! Both sunrises and sunsets are spectacular from the shore.

Miles of well-marked walking and hiking trails crisscross Graylag’s woodlands of pine, hemlock, birch, oak, beech, maple and an occasional American chestnut. You can take a gentle 15-minute stroll or hike for hours on more challenging terrain. Depending on your route, you may discover a rocky brook or vernal pools and there are roughhewn benches provided at various points for resting that have lovely views. Mornings and evenings, you may catch a glimpse of a deer or even a moose. You’re more likely to encounter chipmunks, tiny frogs and salamanders.

We have nurtured gardens, bogs of wildflowers and other native plants for your enjoyment, with more than 400 species in all. You’re welcome to pick the highbush blueberries that ripen in early August. Nightlife at Graylag usually means reading and conversation, an evening walk, looking at the stars, a cookout or campfire at the massive stone fire pit near the waterfront, followed by a sound and restful sleep.

Group events like private classes, meetings and restorative retreats can be held in Midway, which is a roomy cabin with plenty of space to sprawl out. Midway is generally open to be enjoyed by all of our guests, but if you would like to reserve it specifically for your group’s use, it can be rented for $100 per day. Midway will be equipped with a composting toilet, running water, ice machine and mini fridge. We can also supply you with additional tables and chairs per your request. Please ask us if you would like to reserve Midway, and we can add the cost to your reservation.

Graylag is collaborating in an exciting, innovative program with Timbernook This is a daytime program designed to introduce young children to the wonders of nature. When we shared this news with some long-time guests, they were concerned about how this nature program would affect their stay at Graylag. Rest assured, this program will in no way interfere with our guests’ experiences at Graylag. TimberNook’s program will take place deep in the woods, far away from Graylag’s guests, where a few well-supervised children will be exploring and learning about nature with professional staff. The waterfront, common spaces, and cabin areas will remain for guest use only, just as they have always been. Respect for our guests’ privacy is our main priority, so we have planned carefully to ensure that TimberNook’s presence will not impact your stay at Graylag. The peace and quiet of Graylag will be unchanged — we guarantee it!

Need catering? Graylag is now offering a brand new farm-to-table catering option for our guests hosting parties of 8 or more people. Short Creek Farm is located just down the street from us, and Farmers Dave and Jeff are excited to share their bounty with you! Short Creek specializes in pasture raised pork, grass-fed beef and heirloom veggies. Farmer Dave also happens to be an excellent chef, so he would be the one personally preparing the meat and side dishes all sourced directly from his farm! Talk about farm-to-table, eh? Please allow as much notice as possible if you would like to use this service, as what we can offer will depend on the status of their current crop yields.
